Your BIOS serial is saved via software, not hardware. Like anything else that's software based, the BIOS serial can be changed.
How To Change Bios Chip
The serial number data, as well as date and time are kept running even when the computer is powered off through a tiny battery called the CMOS battery. By turning off the CMOS battery, you can force the motherboard to lose it's BIOS serial number data and automatically generate a random new number when its rebooted. Turn off your computer and disconnect any power cables coming to the computer.
Touch your hands on a metallic surface that's grounded to discharge any static electricity on your hands. Unscrew the screws on the exterior of the computer and open the computer case. Look for the motherboard, which holds the CPU. Locate the CMOS battery, which looks like a coin roughly half an inch wide. Pull up the clip that holds the battery in place.
Lift out the battery. If there is no battery clip, use two fingers to pry the battery out. In either case, it should be relatively easy to get the battery out. Do not use excessive force. Wait 30 seconds to make sure the power to the CMOS is completely drained. Place the battery back into its socket. Turn on the computer.
Press 'F1,' 'F2,' 'F12' or 'Del' to enter setup mode. Your BIOS serial number should be changed. Note that you'll also lose data on additional drives to connect on startup, any custom BIOS settings, BIOS passwords as well as time and date. Change all the necessary settings, save your changes and reboot.
We recently had a motherboard changed on a Latitude D630 and then discovered some funny things happening in spiceworks. The laptop was being reported as an OptiPlex workstation instead of a Latitude laptop and the warranty info was incorrect. After looking into the problem I discovered the Service tag in the BIOS did not match the service tag on the bottom of the laptop and that is why information was being reported incorrectly. After being on the phone with Dell (and trying to use the asset application to change the service tag) I was told that the motherboard had to be replaced and the tech would put on the correct service tag.
This didn't seem right to me as the system was working perfectly otherwise, so I did some digging on the net. Here is my solution. Update: this 'How to' is quite old now and seems not to work on newer models. Some people have had luck with finding newer Dell diagsnostic cd images or see this article. How to install flip down dvd player in honda odyssey.
You may be negating any warranty you have with HP, unless your swapping the moherboard out and wanting to match some sticker on the LT case itself. Dell has a utilitiy for this sort of activity, but as long as you give dell the original AssetTag(aka DellTag) you can get warranty work. HP workstations seem to (according to hp.com) have a place for a custom tag and or setting yout own. Asset Tag Repository for storing company-specific property asset numbers for easy tracking Initially set equal to the system serial number Stored in a protected section of non-volatile memory that can be accessed and modified with the F10 Setup program You can use windows wmi to retrieve the tags, open a cmd prompt and type wmic.exe /output:c: bios-info.html BIOS get /format:hform.xsl Then open the bios-info.html on the C: -rich.
The only one that I'm aware of that is shown by the BIOS is the CPU's Serial Number which should be switched on By default on all new hardware. So if you want to change this Serial Number you need to change the CPU as it is encoded into the CPU and can be used to trace the individual computer that it was fitted to originally. The other numbers are for things like a BIOS String which identifies the Make & Model of the M'Board and changing this would result in someone looking for the wrong Drivers at best and quite likely looking for the wrong thing all together at worst and loading the wrong drivers causing the system to no longer work.
While it is Technically Possible to prevent the BIOS Reporting the CPU Serial Number or even to misreport it that would involve writing a new BIOS Instruction set for every Model or variation of existing models and even resulting in killing the NB's if this was applied to the wrong Model or Revision Numbers. So exactly what is it you want to do here any much more importantly Why do you want or feel the need to do this? This is something that I would expect from people dealing in Stolen NB's as there is no other reason to attempt this.
I just wanted to point out there are other reasons to need to change a BIOS S/N. We use a utility that records the S/N from the BIOS and adds it to our inventory database. When we replace a mother board, the S/N in the BIOS no longer matches the S/N physically on the device.
We need to make those match. Dell has a utilty to accomplish this, but I have yet to find on from HP. There is a section in the HP BIOS named 'Notebook Serial Number' and that is what needs to be changed.

I know this is an incredibly old post, but people still find and read this stuff, and no one gave a good answer, they just accused him of stealing the laptops. (He may have, but thats not the topic.). Since there are local HP resellers in Brazil, importing US product is called a 'gray market' distribution channel. Since a warranty is valuable, and buying a truckload of stolen laptops in Miami and selling them in Brazil would void the warranty, the guy is most likely doing at least two of these three things: 1) Fencing stolen merchandise 2) Attempting to Defraud HP Corp 3) Attempting to Defraud HP customers in Brazil 4) Competing unfairly with HP Dealers in Brazil 5) Evading taxes and import duties (which is why it costs more to buy it legally). Other than that, it's perfectly legit.

DSTCD is the Asset utility. There are two versions. One that will allow only for the Asset Tag to be set (different from Service Tag) and one that will allow the Service Tag to be set. If you did indeed set the Service Tag and not the Asset Tag, then great. Dell service technicians are not supposed to distribute it. If you only set the Asset Tag, then it will change little of what is going on.
You can confirm your Service Tag in the BIOS or in Windows (command prompt - wmic bios get serialnumber). If you got it working, I'm glad.
